Windows Vista to use Canon Color Management

September 13, 2005 – Microsoft and Canon announced today that the new version of Windows will utilize Canon’s Kyuanos color management system. The announcement follows a statement by Microsoft in June, indicating that Windows Vista will provide OS level support for RAW files.

Canon’s Kyuanos color management system is being licensed for use in Microsoft’s new Windows Color System, which will provide a new color infrastructure and translation engine, allowing Windows Vista to automatically compensate for differences in color from different input and output devices.

The integration of the Kyuanos system, whose name is derived from the Greek word for blue, aims to implement several specific features into Windows Vista: a new way of describing the color characteristics of specific devices; the implementation of the CIECAM02 color model, which should help to preserve the true color of images; more gamut-mapping models that should provide better color space conversion; and full integration with ICC based workflows. Additionally the Windows Color System will provide an easy monitor calibration wizard and a centralized color management control panel.
