Canon PowerShot SD550 review at CNET

The pocket-sized 7.1 Megapixel PowerShot SD550 Digital ELPH joins Canon’s line-up between the SD500 and SD400 models which will continue to be available. The new PowerShot SD550 digicam offers consumers a big 2.5-inch LCD screen, while retaining Canon’s famed functionality and optical viewfinder. Additionally, the new cameras feature a new UI display designed to capitalize on the larger screen size.

CNET have reviewed the Canon PowerShot SD550, awarded it a rating of 7.2 out of 10 or Very Good, and said-

"It's no surprise that the PowerShot SD550's photos match those of the SD500 since they use the same components. Overall, the Canon PowerShot SD550 delivered sharp, almost too-saturated images, with a slightly cool white balance. Metering and exposure were top-notch, even in difficult backlit and sidelit scenes. Though it tended to blow out highlights a bit more than we'd like, we saw excellent dynamic range in the midtones and shadows. Because blown-out highlights tend to create high-contrast edges, however, we also saw more frequent purple fringing there and on the sides of the scene, where lens focus falls off. Shots taken at ISO 50 and ISO 100 displayed relatively low noise; as expected, noise did become more apparent at settings of ISO 200 and ISO 400.

The Canon PowerShot SD550 is a very well-designed, 7-megapixel snapshot camera. Just don't look for advanced controls."

I know lots of people who don't want to pay for a lot of bells and whistles they'll never use, so I tend to recommend digital cameras like the SD550 to them.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX1 Review

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX1 has a broad set of manual controls, image stabilization, and a wide lens and sensor crammed into a compact package. A good choice for aspiring photographers who want the portability of a snapshot camera but a robust manual feature set.

DP Review today posted their Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX1 Review and liked it a lot except for the noise problem at ISOs above 100. They went on to say-

"We had real difficulty deciding between Above Average and Recommended for the LX1; it is capable of delivering stunning resolution, sharpness and detail - and is stuffed to the gills with useful photographic features, but for a camera to exhibit this level of noise at ISO 80 in 2005 is pretty unforgivable. Take a look at the full size shots, print them if you want, and decide for yourself if you're happy to make a compromise on noise in order to get all that detail."

The Kodak Easyshare V550 is one of the smallest and thinnest cameras that Kodak has ever produced. Smaller and thinner than a deck of playing cards, the V550 is designed for those who seek high-style, compact personal electronics that combine excellent image quality, performance and simplicity. The V550’s case is solidly constructed from aluminium alloy and is available in silver or a very attractive black finish. The design and control layout is simple and logical, although the main mode buttons on the top panel are quite unusual. They aren’t really buttons as such, but sprung cut-out areas that are pressed down to activate them. This means they aren’t easy to distinguish by touch, but they are illuminated from below with a cool sci-fi blue light, so at least they are easy to find in the dark. This is good, because they include the buttons for Auto mode, portrait mode, movie mode and scene mode. This last function brings up a screen full of icons on the monitor, with options including sport, landscape, close-up, night portrait, night landscape, snow and more. One unusual option is a setting for panning shots of moving objects. Each option has a small piece of explanatory text, including advice on holding the camera steady.

The Kodak Easyshare V550

Trusted Reviews just posted a Kodak Easyshare V550 review and have awarded it their "Recommended" seal. They said-

"The Kodak EasyShare V550 is a stylish, well made and technically impressive camera, with excellent performance and exceptionally good image quality. DigitalCameraInfo reviewed the Olympus Stylus 800 Digital Camera. They said-

"The Olympus Stylus 800 is a decent camera, albeit at a serious price. While the expense brings an 8 megapixel sensor, a host of features, and some intriguing technology, the camera’s looks and awkward feel are significant drawbacks. And the intriguing technology comes at a price. The camera’s 8 megapixel potential resolution (which is likely responsible for a bulk of the cost) is not available when users wish to utilize the impressive 4 fps high speed burst mode or increased low light capabilities. Rather, users will have to switch down to a resolution setting that is less than 50% of the camera’s maximum potential, producing images that are only fit for 4 x 6-inch prints.

With 22 preset modes, the camera is best suited for the automatically-reliant crowd, but it does include a reasonable degree of manual control as well, such as aperture and shutter priority settings. The large, bright 2.5-inch LCD screen handles bright situations well and compensates for the lack of an optical viewfinder. The camera is weatherproofed with rubber seals, although not quite as durable as a whole as some other rugged point-and-shoot models. During testing, the camera also consumed batteries at a remarkable rate, and with no included AC adapter, users may find themselves waiting a while as the batteries juice up.

During testing, the camera controlled noise reasonably well in automatic mode, a definite advantage for snapshooters; however, the images will be a bit soft and colors will stray from their natural hue. This should not disappoint the target audience, as novice users looking for a camera to grow into won’t be disappointed, but those who often shoot rapidly moving subjects and would like a manual shooting mode will find the slow auto focus and lack of control a serious drawback.."

The new Sony Cybershot DSC-T5 will be available in four colors - red, champagne gold, silver and black - and sports a five megapixel imager and prism-folded 3x optical zoom lens protected by a sliding lens barrier. Other features include a large 2.5" LCD display, built-in four-mode flash, 32MB of built-in memory, Memory Stick Duo / PRO Duo storage slot, and USB 2.0 high-speed connectivity.

CNET have just posted a Sony CyberShot DSC-T5 review and said-

"The Sony Cyber Shot DSC-T5, part of the sleek and slender T line, shares much of the DNA of its T7 sibling, including a 5.1-megapixel Super HAD CCD, a 3X Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar zoom lens, and a stylish design, as well as point-and-shoot ease of use. Sleek, sexy design; easy to use; large and clear LCD; solid snapshot feature set; high-quality movie mode; improved flash coverage; built-in tripod socket; decent battery life for a small cell; comes in four colors.

Although the Sony Cyber Shot DSC-T5 features improvements over its T7 sibling, as well as much better value, its image quality still doesn't match the camera's other attributes."

They gave it a 6.2 out of 10 rating or Good.

Olympus Optio WP review at Steves

The Pentax Optio WP is a compact digital camera that features JIS Class 8-equivalent waterproof performance and has a body only 22mm thick. What's more, the Optio WP also features a 2.0-inch LCD monitor, a 3x optical zoom lens, and the imaging power of 5.0 effective megapixels.

Olympus EVOLT E-500 Preview at Steves

The Olympus EVOLT E-500 is a full-featured, 8-megapixel digital SLR camera that was designed to be used easily by photographers of any skill level. Looks lhe E-500 has many of the same features as the E-300 but it has as more traditional (YAY!) body, a larger LCD display, new noise reduction software, and much more. The EVOLT E-500 is their third camera in their Four-thirds system, this camera could be their finest offering yet.

Kodak EasyShare C360 Digital Camera -The Imaging Resource Quick Review

The Kodak EasyShare C360 comes with a 3x optical zoom lens and a 1/2.5-inch 5 MP CCD. The camera has a well-sized 2.0-inch LCD screen with 110,000 pixels and a real image optical zoom finder with zoom recognition. The C360 is capable of recording video at a maximum resolution of 640 x 480 with a frame rate of 24 frames per second, which is a bit under the preferred 30 fps needed for smooth video capture.

Simple external controls and an intuitive menu setup designed for easy navigation means the novice digital camera user should find the C360 a reliable source of digital photography solutions.

The Kodak Easyshare C360

The Imaging Resource have written a Kodak EasyShare C360 Digital Camera Quick Review and have this to say about it-

"Kodak's EasyShare digital cameras have consistently proved to be among the easiest to use of any I've tested, and the C360 is no exception. Its fully automatic exposure control handles a wide variety of conditions, and the range of preset exposure controls extend the camera's capabilities nicely for more difficult situations. The 5.0-megapixel CCD captures high resolution images, with plenty of detail to make good-looking 8x10 inch prints, and the 3x optical zoom provides some flexibility for portraits and close-up shots. I felt that the Kodak C360's lens placed it at a bit of a disadvantage relative to some of its competitors though, as it tended to produce rather soft corners in its images, with a fair amount of chromatic aberration at wide angle as well. Its anti-noise processing also tended to lose some subject detail in areas of subtle contrast. How you feel about this will depend on how large you commonly print your photos though: The "flattening" of subject detail was visible in 8x10 prints, but pretty much a non-issue at sizes of 5x7 and below. The EasyShare C360's optical and image-processing shortcomings do need to be balanced against its low cost, surprisingly rich feature set, excellent color, attractive styling, and great ease of use though. If you plan to print a lot of your photos at 8x10 inches or larger, you may want to consider a camera like the Kodak EasyShare V550, which has a noticeably higher-quality lens. For casual snapshot use though, the Kodak C360 is an inexpensive digital camera with very appealing color at great ease of use."

Stepping Up to Double Lighting

For all you flash-on-the-camera photographers out there, you've come a long way, but there's a higher lighting plateau of quality photography called double lighting.

Are the benefits of using two lights for your social events worth all the trouble and extra cost?

Sure, the flash on the camera is safe, foolproof and convenient, but if you compare the two types of lighting, the difference is striking.

First, the color is more intense. The main light strikes the subject at an angle, sending the reflected, colorless light off axis, away from the lens. Except for highlights, the absorbed and scattered light entering the lens contains only saturated color. The light on the camera serves two purposes: to keep the density level of the shadow areas high enough for good contrast and detail, secondly to evenly light the whole picture area, and thirdly to flatter the faces and remove the bags under the eyes.

In order to achieve the above benefits, a proper ratio must be retained. One easy way is to set the lens on F8, the fill flash on F8 automatic, and the modeling light on F11 automatic. This configuration should produce twice as powerful a light coming from the modeling light as from the fill light no matter what the distance from the lens to the subject. Ideally, a flash meter should be used to verify and fine tune the output. If a flash meter is not available, a few test exposures will suffice.

A second method sets the fill flash on manual one half power and the modeling light at manual full power. This setting requires the F stop to be changed if the distance from the lens to the subject changes significantly unless OTF (off-the-film) is available in the camera.

While the fill flash can be conveniently kept small, there are several options available for the modeling light. A small silver umbrella reflector (minimum 18 inches in diameter) is the least expensive and does a good job. Better is a soft box (minimum 12 inches in diameter) but requires a more powerful head. Simplest is bare bulb which is soft but not too flattering to faces and requires a lot of power. Four hundred ISO is fast enough to use with 100 WS electronic flash. I recommend the use of a radio slave to trigger the second light for a guaranteed proprietary use. Other flashes in the room will have no effect on your second light, saving the batteries and preventing other photographers from using your light and/or ruining their own pictures.

Though a light stand is sufficient to support your second light, with a little instruction, a live person will save you a lot of running around. The modeling light may be situated to the photographer's right or left side, producing a thirty degree angle to the subject. If the subject is twenty feet away from the lens, the modeling light should be seven feet to your right or left. An added benefit is that the backgrounds will be softly lit, but will never overpower the subject in importance.

For those photographers working with a digital camera with a built in pop up flash, a small slave flash will do the job. Vivitar makes a slave flash with a guide number of 93.

This is three times more powerful than the flash in the camera but 1/4 or 1/8 power can be set for a better ratio. With the camera ISO set on 200, the Vivitar DF200 is powerful enough to be used as a bounce flash. Aim the slave flash into a corner of the room (half on the ceiling) behind you and to the side. Use full power on the flash and try setting the aperture on F5.6. The camera flash may need to be softened with a piece of translucent plastic. I recommend a few test exposures to verify the ratio. One benefit of bounce flash is the nice modeling you get on the faces. Another is that the same camera settings can be used for any distance from the camera.

You will be amazed at the saturated colors and the three dimensional effect of the modeling on the subject.

My experience as a wedding photographer allowed me to compare many styles of shooting. Comments welcome.

Sony Cybershot DSC-S90 User Review

Sony's Cybershot DSC-S90 is one of the beefier Sony models but makes the most of it with a big LCD screen. With 4.1 megapixels, the compact digital camera batteries last longer because of its 1/2.7-inch Super HAD CCD and updated Real Imaging Processor. The S90 sports a larger LCD screen instead of increasing the megapixel count. The Sony Cybershot S90 has a large 2.5-inch LCD screen on its 4.75 x 2.5 x 1.6 inch plastic camera body. A 3x Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar optical zoom lens also adds a nice touch to this point-and-shoot digital camera. The S90 has seven preset scene modes along with a full manual and program automatic mode, making this a great digital camera for beginners whose skills are still blossoming. This type of camera often appeals to a family where some people are looking for ease of use while other are looking for more advanced features.

Sony Cybershot DSC-S90

Steve's Digicams today posted their Sony Cybershot DSC-S90 User Review and I said-

"I was pleased with the image quality of the S90's 4M Fine mode. Outdoors images were well-exposed and sharp with true to life colors. Our indoor shots were well illuminated by the flash, which seemed more powerful than the 12.5-foot range claimed by Sony. Portraits had realistic skin tones, and the red eye reduction flash mode proved effective. Autofocus worked quite well in dim lighting, helped by the focus assist lamp. Flash power was well controlled at close range, making the S90 a good candidate for capturing images of small objects for online auction listings.

The Sony Cyber-shot S90 is a good all-around performer. Its very good image quality, useful features, 2.5-inch LCD, and good shooting performance belie its low $249 MSRP. The Kodak EasyShare C360 compact digital camera offers users a fully automatic camera without the confusion or hassle of complicated menu structures, printing set-ups, and manual controls.

The EasyShare C360 comes with a 3x optical zoom lens and a 1/2.5-inch 5 MP CCD. The camera has a well-sized 2.0-inch LCD screen with 110,000 pixels and a real image optical zoom finder with zoom recognition. The C360 is capable of recording video at a maximum resolution of 640 x 480 with a frame rate of 24 frames per second, which is a bit under the preferred 30 fps needed for smooth video capture.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ5 Review

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ5 is a 5-megapixel digital camera with a high-quality Leica 12x optical zoom. The Leica DC Vario-Elmarit 12x zoom is equivalent to a 36 - 432mm zoom on a 35mm camera with a F2.8 to F3.3 maximum aperture. Panasonic's advanced MEGA O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) enhances the camera's telephoto zoom capabilities, helping to deliver sharp, vivid images even when taking handheld telephoto shots or shooting in low light. It uses motion sensors, which detects even slight hand movement and integrally links the lens control to the motion of the camera to reduce jitter. Pretty cool.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ5 5MP Digital Camera with 12x Image Stabilized Optical Zoom

Olympus EVOLT E-500 User Report

Surprise!! Olympus has just introduced their new EVOLT E-500 digital SLR. Looks lhe E-500 has many of the same features as the E-300 but it has as more traditional (YAY!) body, a larger LCD display, new noise reduction software, and much more. The EVOLT E-500 is their third camera in their Four-thirds system, this camera could be their finest offering yet.

High reliability:

For all ardent photographers, image quality has the highest priority, and the Olympus E-500 does everything to ensure perfect photos in every situation. By incorporating the Supersonic Wave Filter, the problem of dust entering the camera body and landing on the CCD while changing lenses – a phenomenon until now virtually impossible to prevent – is finally solved. As a piece of dust can cover several thousand pixels on the CCD, even the tiniest particles can potentially cause serious damage to photos. The patented technology ensures worry-free lens changing anywhere and anytime, enabling users to really experience the brilliance of dust-free pictures. Developed by Olympus, the Supersonic Wave Filter generates ultra-high-speed vibrations that shake off dust and other particles, which are then captured on a special adhesive membrane. This function is invoked at each start-up of the camera but may also be manually effected. This ingenious solution also spares users the otherwise necessary time and expense of cleaning dusty image sensors.

High image quality:

With 8.0 million pixels, the Olympus E-500 ensures subjects are always recorded in brilliant detail. Furthermore, rather than using an ordinary Interline Transfer CCD, this model incorporates a Full Frame Transfer CCD (FFT CCD). This type of CCD has a larger pixel area, because there is no dedicated transfer channel, instead the photodiode itself is used for this purpose. As a result, the FFT CCD captures more electrons, to deliver a higher signal/noise ratio and a wider dynamic range. The photos therefore benefit from greater exposure latitude, more detail and less noise. High mobility

Sequential shooting at 2.5fps is possible with all image data formats. In the HQ (1/8) or SQ JPEG format, images can even be recorded up to the full memory card capacity when using high-speed media, such as SanDisk SDCFX (Extreme III). In addition, users also benefit from the two memory card slots – one for CompactFlash and another for xD-Picture Cards – which add to this model’s practicality and provide extra data security.

Operation is further enhanced by the camera’s large 6.4cm/2.5” HyperCrystal LCD screen with 214,000 pixels for framing and viewing shots.
