Are you one of those people, that have resisted the move to digital photography from the world of film cameras? If so, then you're definitely in the minority. Digital camera sales are on the upswing, and even in a tired economy, they continue top online sales, and fly off the electronic store shelves. It's practically impossible to avoid owning a digital camera these days, even if you wanted to. Even if you've managed to avoid buying a standalone digital camera, you probably have one built into your cell phone. Since cell phones are even more pervasive then digital cameras, chance are pretty good you have one of those. Additionally, chances are you've got a camera built into your cell phone. They've gotten so cheap, it's easy for a manufacturer to justify the cost of including them.

But, if your tired of the low quality pictures, and limited zoom capability, and short video time of your cell phone camera, then maybe it's time to move up to a digital camera. The low price of most digital cameras these days, do make them seem like attractive alternatives. For a couple of hundred bucks, you can get a pretty amazing compact digital camera with all kinds of the latest technology like face recognition, multiple point auto focus, and image stabilization. Features that would have likely cost you $100 each just a few short years ago.

And while we're thinking of upgrading cameras, you may just want to skip the whole compact digital camera scene, and go directly to a good SLR camera. I know, I know, that sounds like a huge leap in technology and price, and your kind of right and wrong at the same time. The jump from cell phone camera to compact digital camera does give you a few advantages, but not a lot of room for growth. You'll quickly master your compact camera, and grow tired of it's limitations. A good entry level SLR camera can be had for close to $500 these days, and will provide more long term benefits. In other words, years from now that SLR will not limit your photographic boundaries. SLR's are also very upgradeable with the addition of extra lenses. Something compact digital cameras just cannot do.
